AKIM SWEDRU SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
1. VISION
To turn out God – fearing, well – balanced and self – confident boys and girls capable of taking the challenges of a dynamic would in their stride, while making the best of every opportunity for self development and service to mankind.
2. MISSION
a. To put in place a framework for boys and girls to develop to the full, the talents they are endowed with.
b. To inculcate in students the sprit of mutual respect.
c. To promote the attainment of high academic standards through proper character training and hard work.
d. To develop in the students an awareness of their responsibilities to the community and the broader society to which they belong.
3. HISTORY OF SCHOOL
i. Year of establishment: September 1970
ii. Location: Off Adiembra Road, Akim Swedru
iii. Status: The school is co-educational Day/Boarding.
4. MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE YEARS
SSSCE: Quite Good
WASSCE: Great improvements over the years. Scored 94% in 2008 and 96% in 2009. For three times between 2005 – 2009 the school has placed 1st three times in the Birim Central Municipal and Birim South District.
Many students gained admission to Tertiary Institutions in 2009 and many more would do so in 2010. Incentive Packages and enticing motivation to teaching encourage them to work harder, making teaching and learning very efficient and effective.
The school performed creditably at Games and Sports. It has on several occasions represented the zoon in Soccer. Boys and Girls, Volley ball (Boys and Girls) and in athletics.
5. SCHOOL FACILITIES
Academic
a. Classrooms: The school has 42 classrooms, however 18 out of the member have no louver blades and roofs are leaking.
b. Laboratories: There is a one 3 – storey block which houses the laboratories. There is the need for serious refurbishment. Most of the facilities have broken down. The labs should be stocked with modern equipment to enhance quality of teaching and learning of science.
c. Library: The library needs to be fully stocked with reference books, periodicals encyclopedias. It is believed that if the library is better stocked, the performance of students will be extraordinary. We would appreciate support from corporate bodies, individuals etc.
6. STAKEHOLDERS
i. Old Students: Active in helping develop the school. Their association called AKISSOSSA could be more active if properly organized. Currently the Board Chairman is an AKISSOSSAN.
ii. P.T.A: It has been highly instrumental in facilitating development in the school. The Association has put up a six unit classroom block, two semi-etatched bungalows for teachers, a computer laboratory, a corn mill, has helped in completing the 1st storey of a girls block for female accommodation, and has many activities lined up for implementation.
The Association also motivates workers with handsome packages, thus the improvement in the performance of students in exams and co-curricula activities.
iii. Traditional Authority: Competently represented on the Board. Immediate Past Chairman (2003-2009) Nana Prof. Asante Kodan, was highly instrumental in pleading with the former President to give the school a 30 seater Nissan bus and a seed many of GH¢50,000 to start a two storey dormitory block for girls.
The Traditional Authority has also organized discuss issues with staff and students and has been giving incentive packages to staff to motivate them to work harder.
iv. District Assembly: Has been supplying furniture items and other equipment to school. It has also been providing counselling services for staff and students. The District Director visits the school regularly to interact with both workers and students and interactions have helped to increase performance.
v. The school has also been receiving support from donor agencies philanthropists, Bosome citizens in and outside the country. Their support has kept the school moving and we are grateful to them. The school will continue to rely on the for its future development and its for march to fame.
