BIMBILLA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
- BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
Bimbilla secondary school was founded in the 1981 through the request by the Bimbilla Community under the leadership of the former Member of Parliament (M.P) during the Liman’s regime for the Bimbilla Constituency and former Principal of the E.P College of Education, Bimbilla, Mr. Adam Marshall Adu. The school was sited in the premises of the then Bimbilla Central Junior Secondary School and also formerly, the Bimbilla Central Middle School in the nineteen sixties (1960s).
However, according to this Educationist, Mr. Mashall Adu, the leader of the Community at that time, said, they had a simple vision to the establishment of this school. According to him their vision was to open this school to enable their children to acquire that level of education at home instead of passing through the then Common Entrance Examination to be picked and sent to far distant schools like Yendi, Ghanasco in Tamale, Tamasco in Tamale, Bisco in Tamale, Bawku Secondary School in Bawku and Navarongo Secondary School in Upper East Region. In short, the Secondary Education was brought to the door stairs of the Bimbilla Community . The second message was their mission.
Their mission was to educate their children with that level of Education and further, to come back home and serve the people of Bimbilla. In their view, there were numerous challenges as regards to teaching and their Health situation.
Hence, courses such as General Arts, Business and Health science were introduced into the school system to meet future demands for teachers and nurses for the community.
Consequently like other schools, Bimbilla Secondary School had a crest and motto. The motto of the school was a slogan that read: “PEACE, KNOWLEDGE AND SERVICE”.As a Community base school, its catchment area was large stretching from Bakpaba in the North, Damanko in the South, Natinga in the East, and Sabonjida in the West.

The school held its first Examination conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) in 1986 at the school certificate and General Certificate of Examination levels.
However, this first batch of candidates wrote the final Examination in Yendi, at Yendi Secondary School as the centre. In 1986 the school presented only twenty-five (25) candidates with their performance as stated below from 1986 to 1994.
YEAR | NUMBER OF CANDATES | GRADE1 DISTINCTION | GRADE 1 | GRADE 2 | GRADE 3 | G C E | FAIL |
1986 | 25 | 0 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 15 | 5 |

1988 | 26 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 15 | 7 |
1989 | 28 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 6 | 14 | 6 |

1994 | 361 | 0 | 3 | 8 | 37 | 132 | 133 |
With a close study of the above performances, one sees that students increase sturdily in their performances as the years go by, but today, students’ performances rather decrease as years go by as far as S S S C E and W A S CE are concerned.
- ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The school however has been observing the Science and Mathematics Quizes especially both at the Region and District levels. We hope that in the near future, the students should be able to enter into the National Science and Mathematics Quizes. Synthetically, Bimbilla Secondary School has been participating in sports festivals both at the Zonal and Regional level. The school performance is always on the average.
- SCHOOL ACADEMIC FACILITIES
ICT LABORATORY |
There are only thirteen (13) classrooms for teaching and learning, three dormitory blocks for boys’ accommodation and only one (1) dormitory block for girls’ accommodation. But there is one effective Science Laboratory and effective recreational grounds. It also has a poor library facility and inadequate library books.
- ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
The school currently offers five (5) programmes. This includes, General Arts, Business, General Science, Agricultural Science and I.C.T. Currently the school lacks professional teachers for Science and I.C.T, programmes for effective teaching and learning to take place.
- DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS
The development partners include the P.T.A, the Board, Old Students, G.E.S, District Assembly, the traditional authority and Non-governmental organizations such as camfed, CCFC, UNCEF just to mention a few. These bodies have all played their role in the development of the school.
