SCHOOL ENTRANCE |
The ultimate aim of this school, Bolgatanga Senior High School (Big Boss) and affectionately referred to as “Pride of the East”, is to attain such an enviable level that it will become a Regional Model School of Excellence.
- SYNOPSIS OF BOLGATANGA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Bolgatanga Senior High School (Big BOSS) is situated in Winkogo, about 8km south of Bolgatanga, the Upper East regional capital. Even though called Bolgatanga Senior High School it is actually within the Talensi-Nabdam District.
It was founded in 1970 in Zuarungu at the same campus presently occupied by Zuarungu Senior High School in 1970, precisely on the 15 October, with Mr. Bayala C.J. Yibrul as it’s first Headmaster.
The school started with a student population of seventy-five (75), teaching staff strength of three (3), and a supporting staff of eight.
STAFF FLAT |
Faced with lack of space (land) to develop, the 1st batch wrote their GCE/SC examination at Zuarungu, 1975. The 2nd batch wrote the examination in 1976, 1st Final Examination, in Winkogo. The 3rd batch was sent to Kanton Secondary School, Tumu.
In 1976, the new location i.e. its present permanent site, was ready and the school relocated to where it now is with a vast campus of a mile square and part of its boundary running twenty metres parallel to the Bolgatanga – Tamale Highway.
Bolgatanga Senior High School was formerly called Bolgatanga Secondary School, Big BOSS for short. ‘Big’ was tagged to BOSS to differentiate it from two other schools at the time, Bompata Secondary School and Boah Amponsem Secondary School, both of which also started off as BOSS.
STATUS OF INSTITUTION: It is a mixed boarding public school.

- ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE YEARS
NEW ADMINISTRATION BLOCK |
The school prides itself in being the best in the East and it’s not a vain claim. Our sterling performance is well known and suffice to say that if we even limit our results to just the last five (5) years we can boast of an average of 93% pass. All these years i.e. since 2004 our total candidature has ranged from 390 to 425.
Our reputation as contestants for the then Brilliant Science and Mathematics Quiz was outstanding and we even produced the best performing contestant in the person of Master Yakubu Subur who is now doing his Medical Course in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). For four years in a row we were always seeded and always progressed to appreciable levels.
Products of Big BOSS are numerous in all tertiary institution as we have consistently turned out not less than a yearly average of 350 candidates qualifying for all tertiary institutions.

Our P.T.A. executive is an admirably able body leading the association and always ready to come to the assistance of the school in several ways: inter alia it
- supports the extra class programme in the school by financially motivating the teachers
- initiated and built a four-apartment accommodation for the staff
- has renovated a long abandoned structure to serve as extra dormitory accommodation for our students
