4. BRIEF HISTORY OF EDINAMAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Edinaman Senior High School was established on the 9th of January, 1978. It was first established in the Elmina Castle. Earlier on, in 1977 the Elmina Development Committee requested the Central Regional Administration to renovate parts of the Elmina Castle to be used as a Secondary school.
Three men namely – Nana Kodwo Eduakwa IV, an educationist, Mr. William Plange Botsio, an Estate Officer of the University of Cape Coast, both of blessed memory and Mr. Benedict Ekow Saiper (formally called B.E. F Sniper) a tutor of the University Practice Secondary School, contributed money to be used as seed money in starting the school.
The first batch of students were selected through a competitive examination in Mathematics and English. Forty- five students were selected from the locality and these became pioneers.
The teaching staff was made up of tutors who hailed from Elmina but were teaching in Secondary Schools in Cape Coast. These included Mr. B. E. Saiper who was the acting Headmaster, Mr. Dennis Yorke, Mr. John Eshun Cudjoe, Mr. Kwamena Tenteh, Miss Comfort Otoo, Mr. A. E. Hagan, Mr. W. K. Kassah, Mr. T. K. Tawiah and Mr. I. K. Nyame. Others were Mr. J. K. Sam and Mr. K Amoah. Ms Benedicta Annan was the typist.
Even though Edinaman Senior High School started as a private school, in January 1978 it was absorbed into the public stream by the Government.
Relocation to Present Site
Through the instrumentality of the then Regional Secretary, the late Mr. Ato Austin, the school was relocated to its present site on the Paul Isert Hill, Pershie in 1992, A twelve -unit block was built to be used as classrooms in addition to some existing facilities. The Parent Teacher Association built an underground water reservoir and also provided a water pumping machine.
Edinaman Senior High School has seen a lot of developments over the years. However the most remarkable is the up-grading of the school into a model first class institution by the Government of former President J.A Kuffour in 2007. Structures such as an ultra modern assembly hall capable of sitting 1200 students, a dining hall, a library, ICT laboratory, tutors’ flat and bungalows and additional dormitories have been built.
Edinaman SHS is a boarding institution. Currently there are seven hundred and twenty-two (722) students in the boarding house. There are adequate facilities for boarders.
