4. BRIEF HISTORY OF INSTITUTION

FOUNDING

Fijai Senior High School Sekondi was established as a result of the 1951 Accelerated Plan for Education of the Government. The inauguration was done by Nana Kobina Nketsiah IV the Omanhene of the Essikado Traditional Area on 29 January 1952 and formal classes began on 30 January 1952.

The school began as Sekondi Day Secondary School and was located at Sekondi Old Hospital premises, the area now occupied by the West Africa Examinations Council.

The school started with 32 boys and 6 girls and reached 48 boys and 12 girls at the end of the first year.

It started with a pioneer staff of four (4) namely:

Mr. Charles Quaye (plucked from Mfantsipim) as the Headmaster; Mr. Samuel Bentsi-Amissah, Mr. S.B. Ofori and Mr. Timothy Ansah. These full-time teachers were supported by three (3) part-time expatriate teachers.

5. MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

Sports

Fijai has been strong in regional and national games.  Without going into too much detail we venture to state that back in the early sixties Fijai chalked the following successes.

1. National Inter school Soccer Champions 1963
2. National Inter school Soccer runners-up 1964

• E.C.O. Addy ( a school senior prefect for three years. 1960/61, 1961/62, 1962/63) held the Western Regional inter-school record at 100 yards and 220 yards till the records in imperial units were expunged in 1974 when Ghana went metric.  Incidentally the records in the two events were annexed by Peter Boafo also from Fijai in 1977 when he clocked 10.8 seconds and 22.3 seconds over 100 metres and 200 metres which records stood for 12 years till 1989.  In the Senior Secondary era Fijai continued to feature strongly at inter-school athletics

• A 12 unit classroom block
• A 10 unit classroom block
• A Library that can seat about 60 students at a time
• A Computer Laboratory with a capacity of about 30 computers
• 1 Science block for Physics, Biology, Chemistry laboratory
• Home Science Block

Non-Academic Facilities

1. A well-developed football field used for CAN 2008
2. The school has a lawn tennis court which is also improvised for use as a volleyball court.

iii              Saturday Entertainment is a “can-never-miss” one tailored to ensure that students do not bolt to town for alternative forms of entertainment.

A number of societies and clubs exist to harness and             develop the interests and potential of students.

1. SPORTS

Students are encouraged to take part in all sports, football, table tennis relatively strongly along with athletics and volleyball which are our strong points.  Hockey and some basketball are also played.

A number of clubs exist and are active in the school.  Some of these are:-

4. d) The Scripture Union
5. e) The Religious Groups belonging to various sects.

10            STAKEHOLDERS

1. OLD STUDENTS

There is a viable old students association, called FIJAI OLD STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (FOSA).  It has its headquarters in Accra with Professor Kobina Nkyekyer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as the National President.

1. PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA)

The Parent-Teacher Association of the school was formed in the mid 70s but its work and role heightened in the 1990s when the concept of cost sharing gained currency.  It is currently chaired by a former teacher of the school whose work took him finally to the Headquarters of the Ghana Education Service.

iii.             TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY

Fijai Senior High School derives its name from the name of the traditional area whose land was acquired for the siting of the school, Fijai Traditional Area.  The school is in a very cordial relationship with the traditional authority and this has been instrumental in securing the boundaries of the school from encroachment.
