3. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION
Name Of Institution: NEW ABIREM /AFOSU SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Year of Establishment: 28TH JANUARY, 1991
Location: NEW ABIREM-BIREM NORTH DISTRICT
New Abirem/Afosu Senior High School was established as a day school with the name New Abirem Secondary School, and the total population of the students was 78 which comprised of 58 males and 21 females respectively.
The school was established as a result of the government’s New Educational Reform Programme embarked upon in 1987.
The school which is centrally positioned had wide catchment areas. Some of the towns/villages in the catchments are Afosu, Praso-Kuma, Abirem, James-Town, Chia and others.
The number of teaching staff at the time of establishment was 9 with Mr. H.O. Ampofo as the headmaster of the school. The school started with the following programmes: Home Economics, General Arts and Science.
The name of the school was later changed to New Abirem/Afosu Senior High School in 2003 following a request by chiefs and people of Afosu.
At the initial stages the school had to embark on series of enrolment drive in its catchments to increase the population. As a developing school, it was beset with a number of problems such as inadequate classroom, lack of teaching staff and accommodation for the few staff members as well as hostel facilities for students.
Currently, the student population stands at one thousand plus while the number of teaching staff is 38. The school now offers General Arts, Home Economics, General Science and Business education.
4. FACILITIES
It’s a boarding school
Two big storey buildings as dormitories for girls and boys respectively
The school has a furnished four laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
There are telephone facilities at the disposal of students
There is regular flow of potable water and a bore hole
There is a big dinning hall, which is capable of accommodating over 1000 students
There are a number of bungalows and flats or apartments to accommodate members of staff.
There is also a visitors’ lounge
