1. BRIEF HISTORY
Nyankumasi Ahenkro Senior High School is a co-educational institution located in the Assin South District of the Central Region of Ghana. The school is both a day and a boarding institution. Its campus presents a panorama of beautiful and modern buildings interspersed with verdant lawns and tropical flora, which provide a cool and refreshing atmosphere congenial for academic studies.
HOW IT ALL STARTED:
The school was established by S.O. Arthur, in 1972 and named Assinman Secondary School but unfortunately, it could not stand.
In 1974 a second attempt was made and named Tsibu Darko Secondary School. Again it couldn’t stand. Mr. Arthur was however not discouraged by the previous failures and so tried the third time in 1984 this time with the name
Nyankumasi Ahenkro Secondary School with 18 students, with the help of Opanyin Danso, Opanyin Oduro, Mame Adjowa Nyiwaa (all of blessed memory) and Mr. Baffo the only survivor, this time, the school could survive because the then Director General of Education, Mr. Owiredu Seconded teachers from Assin Manso and Aburaman Secondary School, to come and help the school.
The teachers and some of the students were housed in the founder’s personal residence, whilst classes were conducted at the cocoa shed. The school was later relocated to Top Hill. When it came to the acquisition of land, he was assisted by the present Omanhene; Odaefo Tsibu Asare and Kyeame Tuku Dum, but the land was donated by the people of Akrampa and Kwadoegya. They then moved from Top hill to our present location.
In 1991, government took over the school, and the first headmaster was Mr. Ofori (of blessed memory). The school was started with 18 students.
After Mr. Ofori came Nana Amo Mensah who continued the good work by adding some classrooms and undertaking other projects in the school. This he was able to do with the assistance and support of the P.T.A. of the school.
PRESENT SITUATION:
From its humble beginning of eighteen students, the schools population is now over 800 students. It has also seen the construction of a new Girl’s dormitory and a host of other projects in the school. The school celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. It now has Mrs Paulina Nyankah as the Headmistress
2. ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
Nyankumasi Ahenkro Senior High School runs three main academic programmes. These comprise General Arts, Business Studies and Home Economics..
3. STAKEHOLDERS
Nyankumasi Ahenkro has a very vibrant PTA which takes keen interest on issues concerning the welfare of the school. It’s the major stakeholder since other stakeholders like the Old students association is still in its infancy stage and it will take a while to stand firmly on its feet. The PTA has embarked on a number of projects including purchasing a school bus, providing staff accommodation, painting the school among others.
Students of Nashs have taken part in a number of competitions notably Sports, quizzes, independence day March-past competitions among others. In all of these, students have excelled to the admiration of many. For instance, the school placed first last year during the Independence Day March-past competition. Again it placed second in a quiz competition organized for schools in the Assin District. Another achievement wealth mentioning is the fact that the school has had so many of its sports men and women selected to participate on behave of the Regional team at the inter-regional school games and they all performed creditably well.
The Central Regional Minister on a visit to the School
The school has also had the privilege of paying host to a number of important personalities. These include the Central Regional Minister, the Regional Director of Education, District Director of Education, Member of Parliament for Assin South, District Chief Executive of Assin South among others. Their visits have contributed in diverse ways in ensuring the growth of the school.
