3. BRIEF HISTORY OF ODOBEN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Odoben Senior high school was established in January 1991 as one of the schools intended by the Government to bring Secondary School education to the door steps of those in the communities.
The school commenced at the premises of Odoben District Assembly Junior Secondary School. Two years later it moved to its present location which is about one kilometer away from town on the Odoben-Brakwa road. The school is located on a hill.
The school was intended to provide Secondary as well as technical education but the tools and equipment for the delivery of technical education were not supplied.
The Agricultural Science programme was the programme initially pursued by school. Visual Art was introduced but was phased out for lack of students interested in pursuing it.
In 1996 Business programme (Accounting option) and Home Economics were introduced.
The school currently runs three programmes. These are Agricultural Science, Business and Home economics.
The school is endowed with very good and hard working teachers almost all of whom are graduates with the exception of two who are Higher National Diploma holders. These two are pursuing further studies to improve upon academic status.
The academic performance of our students at their final examination is enviable and efforts are being made for further improvement.
The population of the school stands at six hundred and eighty-four (684) of whom three hundred and ninety-three (393) are male students and two hundred and ninety-one (291) are female. The school has hostel facilities for boys and girls and is currently constructing an Assembly hall cum canteen to be used in providing meals for interested students.
Location: Agona Odoben, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District, Central Region, Ghana.
4. ACHIEVEMENTS
The school is a young school and can as such boast of very modest academic achievements. There are many of its students in the Universities, Polytechnics and Training Colleges.
The best aggregate at the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination is nine (9). The school is working hard to improve upon this achievement.
In the area of Sports, the lack of a good sports field, sports equipment and incentives to sports boys and girls have impacted negatively on sports achievements in the school. However, the school has been able to produce quite a number of athletes to compete at the regional level and two athletes to compete at the national level.
There is a very high level of discipline in the school due to the co-operation of both staff and students with administration.
