4. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL:
On August 31st 1964, Barima Kofi Bempong II Akwatiahene and his elders took a decision to transfer ownership of the present school grounds to the Roman Catholic Mission for the purpose of establishing a Teacher Training College for Women. Three schools then on it were to be rehoused. The three schools were L/A Boys and L/A Girls Middle Schools and part of the Catholic Primary School.
The Dominican Sisters of Speyer in Germany, who had been invited into the country by Rt. Rev. J.O. Bowers, the then Bishop of the erstwhile Accra Diocese of the Catholic church, financed the building of dining hall, kitchen, bathrooms etc. for the training college.
“Rev. Fr. Lo Bianco, , the parish priest of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Akwatia and Rev. Sister Victricia Koch, the superior of the Dominican sisters in Ghana, supervised the work and also negotiated with the Government for approval for the college.
In October 1965 Rev. Sr. Beatrix Koob arrived in Ghana to become the 1st Principal of the Teacher Training College. The first batch of students (80) arrived in the college on the 25th of November 1965 for the official opening of the college.
In 1966 Rev. Sr. Zita Simons and Rev. Sr. Solamen Ott arrived in Ghana to join Sr. Beatrix. In June 1969, the final year teacher training students took their final year examinations. In September the same year the 1st year students were moved to Begoro Training College and Akwatia Training College was converted into the present day St. Rose’s Secondary School. The school admitted seventy-two (72) students into form one. Since then the school grew to become a fully fledged Secondary School with sixth form facilities in 1984.
With the introduction of the Educational Reforms the school started the Senior Secondary School Programmes in 1991 with four streams, 2 for Science, 2 for Arts and Home Economics (42 students per stream).
From 1979 to 1980, Rev. Sr. Zita Simons. OP took over as the Acting Headmistress in place of Rev. Sr. Beatrix who had left the country on health grounds. From September 1980 Rev. Sr. Solamen assumed the headship of the school, until May 1998 when she retired from the Ghana Education Service. Since then the school saw the assumption of office of the 1st Ghanaian Headmistress; Mrs. Victoria Amaning.
